In the mid-80s a swathe of younger bands influenced by post-punk, moved away from that scene’s darker elements. They preferred jangling guitars and apolitical melodic power pop songs but happily stuck with the amateur aesthetics of flexis, fanzines, DIY gigs and independent releases.
Unusually, many women got involved in all aspects of the scene and the word "twee" was often applied to the bands. Key labels were: Sarah, Subway and Creation, and the most popular bands included: Jesus & Mary Chain, Soup Dragons and Shop Assistants.
